If you have 4.0, you may be able to get away with using the glow
function, but since I don't have that version, I have to rely on old
tricks. YOu can create two versions of your "neon" object, one slightly
larger than the next, and both taking up the same 3D space, one inside
the other. The inner object will have a neon type color and be set to
be very luminous. The outside object will have an almost totally
transparent surface setting and transparent edges, no specularity and a
color a few notches brighter than the inner object. The idea of the
outter object is to simulate the glowing halo present around real life
neon signs.
